The Dead Girls (Las muertas) is a Mexican limited television series based on the 1977 novel by Jorge Ibargüengoitia, which was inspired by the notorious case of Las Poquianchis. The six-episode series, directed by Luis Estrada, premiered on Netflix in 2025.
Set in 1960s Mexico, *The Dead Girls* initially presents itself as a love story before gradually unfolding into a fictionalized crime drama rooted in real historical events. The series explores a web of sex crimes, corruption, and other criminal activities, revealing the darker realities beneath its seemingly romantic premise.
As part of the visual development of the project, motion graphics were created inspired by *Alarma!* magazine, a sensationalist publication that played a significant role in shaping public perception of the events at the time. Known for exaggerating and dramatizing real crimes, the magazine often distorted facts in ways that impacted both the victims and the people involved.
The objective of this design approach was to preserve the film’s atmospheric tone while evoking the vintage aesthetic of sensationalist press culture. The motion graphics aimed to reflect the raw, provocative style of *Alarma!* while maintaining consistency with the series’ dark, historical mood.
